  1. Graver Help File:  README.DAT

  3. Graver is an image engraving tool for converting BMP color images 
  4. into gray-scale BMPs where the gray values correspond to depth or
  5. height. Graver's output, translated to GIF format, can be used as
  6. height fields or bump maps with POV-Ray and similar ray tracing
  7. programs.

  10. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS _____________________________________________

  12. Graver needs:
  13.  
  14. 1)  The Visual Basic runtime module VBRUN300.DLL, preferably 
  15.     located in your Windows/System directory. VBRUN300.DLL is
  16.     available free on CompuServe and many BBSs.
  17.  
  18. 2)  Windows 3.1 and Mouse. 
  19.  
  20. 3)  A 256-color SVGA display.
  21.  
  22. 4)  A 386, 486 or faster PC. Though Graver uses an efficient
  23.     conversion algorithm that eliminates redundant pixel
  24.     operations, Visual Basic's overhead for pixel processing 
  25.     slows the conversion process.

  28. INSTALLATION ____________________________________________________
  29.  
  30. 1)  Unzip the distribution file GRAVER.ZIP into your chosen
  31.     directory. The file includes:
  32.  
  33.         GRAVER.EXE... the main program
  34.         README.DAT... this file
  35.         HOWTODO.DAT... a "how to" help file
  36.         FILE_ID.DIZ... BBS distribution information summary
  37.         HELLO.POV... a POV-Ray application example
  38.         HELLO.GIF... sample engraved text output 
  39.         GROOVES.GIF... sample output 
  40.         CURVES.GIF... sample output 
  41.  
  42. 2)  Ensure that the EXE and DAT files remain in one directory.
  43.     (The DAT files double as help files within Graver.)

  45. 3)  If desired, add the Graver icon to a program manager group.

  48. LEGAL MATTERS ___________________________________________________

  50. Graver is freeware. No compensation is requested by the author
  51. for use of the program and associated files for the purpose 
  52. of creating and rendering images. Any image files created by 
  53. Graver users remain solely the property of those users who may 
  54. apply them toward any purpose commercial or non-commercial.

  56. All of the files included in GRAVER.ZIP are copyrighted by Richard
  57. LeVitt. These files may be freely distributed via BBS services,  
  58. shareware services, and other interested parties according to 
  59. their normal practice. However, no portion of the GRAVER.ZIP 
  60. package should be deleted or significantly modified without
  61. permission. Anyone wishing to bundle files from GRAVER.ZIP with 
  62. a book or other commercial product must first obtain approval 
  63. from the author.

  65. GRAVER.ZIP is provided in the hope it will be helpful to members
  66. of the computer graphics community. As freeware, it is furnished
  67. without warranty or guarantee. Though reasonable care has been 
  68. taken to assure that Graver functions as intended, the author is
  69. not responsible for any damage or losses that may arise through
  70. use of the program.
